Wow!!!! – Well, GOBA 27 for 2015 is now in the record books. We hope everyone enjoyed the “GOBA Experience” despite the rains and flooding. The record? This was the first GOBA ever that we had to completely close the route and transport riders by school bus to the ending town. We know some riders may have been disappointed that they were not able to complete the route and get in their miles for the day, but safety of our riders and volunteers is our number one priority. The rains from the previous couple of days along with the continued rains on Saturday created constantly changing route conditions. We would create a detour around flooded roads, send out a few riders and then we would have to detour around the detour. The 35-40 mph winds contributed to the problem of head and cross winds and increased the risk of hypothermia for riders. In consultation with law enforcement and emergency managers who know the roads and how quickly the roads can flood, we finally had to make the decision to shut down Saturday’s route. We appreciate your understanding that this decision was made to keep everyone safe.
We also wish to thank the school bus drivers from Van Wert and Fort Jennings along with the many local volunteers who transported riders and bikes back to Van Wert in personal vehicles. This allowed us to quickly and efficiently get riders back to their vehicles in Van Wert so they could return to pick up their bikes from the stops. Thanks also to the Fort Jennings and Middle Point sponsors who kept their stops open until all bikes and riders were taken care of.
